Open Training Course – Design of Optical Devices and Photonic Integrated Circuits

Come to Berlin and attend a 3-day intensive training on photonic integrated circuits (PICs) design and simulations. Learn by means of demonstrations and hands-on sessions how to build the simulation setup for your design, set it up and evaluate the performance of your circuit starting from basic components and going up to complex active and passive PICs.

Get acquainted with efficient simulation techniques for device and circuit-level simulations by working with VPImodeDesigner, VPIcomponentMaker Photonic Circuits and its VPItoolkits PDK on various application cases, different technology platforms, and layout-ready process design kits.

The workshop is intended for up to 15 attendees. Course material, computers and software licenses for the duration of the training will be provided.

During the training you will learn how to integrate and automate modeling, optimization and layout extraction of single building blocks and complex hierarchical circuits. Live demonstrations of the recently released Fraunhofer-HHI, SMART Photonics, and LioniX process design kits (PDKs) supporting PhoeniX OptoDesigner, Luceda IPKISS, and Nazca Design tools will be held by our team of simulation experts.

The covered topics include:

  • Photonic design environment – getting started
  • Passive photonic components: waveguides, ring resonators, AWGs
  • Active photonic elements: lasers, amplifiers, tunable optoelectronic components
  • Heterogeneous PICs combining active and passive photonics
  • Hybrid PICs combining different technologies
  • Application cases, your own designs
